Lava Jato: Bretas suspends process against international money changers

Judge Marcelo Bretas, head of the 7th Federal Criminal Court, responsible for cases linked to Operation Lava Jato in Rio de Janeiro, decided to suspend the process of Operation Câmbio, Desligo. The decision, published last Friday (15), was released this Monday (18). The suspension is valid for two months.Lava Jato: Bretas suspends process against international money changers

Câmbio, Desligo was an offshoot of Lava Jato, focused on illegal currency exchange operations that fed the criminal scheme, allowing the evasion of money from corruption in Brazil to abroad. Several characters were spotted at the time, including Dario Messer, who was known as the “money changer of money changers”.

Bretas justified the measure because there is an appeal in the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) to be judged soon, which could change the decisions.

“Thus, considering the complexity and volume of Operation Câmbio, Desligo and the fact that there is an appeal in habeas corpus (164,072) about to be judged at the STJ, exactly about the competence of this court, I understand it is good to suspend the course of this criminal action and the others linked to Operation Câmbio, I turn it off, for two months, which I consider a reasonable period for the RHC to be judged, not foreseeing any damage to the parties”, wrote Bretas.

Exchange I turn off, started in 2018led to the denunciation of 62 people, including former governor Sérgio Cabral, for the crimes of money laundering, foreign exchange evasion and corruption against the international financial system.
