Sunday, October 27, is shaping up to be a crucial date for the political aspirations of the Herrerista sector within the National Party. With the aim of maintaining its current 10 seats in the Senate, this group is strategically moving its pieces. However, the situation is complicated without firm agreements with other sectors, especially after the departure of some of its leaders.
Unlike other groups in the Party, which have already consolidated single lists for the Senate, Herrerismo continues to negotiate its position. The alliances already established by sectors such as Aire Fresco, Por La Patria, El Futuro es de Centro, Mayor Nicolás Olivera, and Espacio País and Alianza Nacional, have made evident the need for a tactical reconfiguration for this group.
Under the leadership of Luis Alberto Heber, the Herrerismo is seeking to increase its representation in the Senate. In this regard, conversations with Juan Sartori, a former presidential candidate and leader of the Todo por el Pueblo sector, have gained importance in recent days.
Options on the Table
The discussions between Herrerismo and Sartori focus on two main alternatives: the possible integration of Sartori into the Herrerismo lists with a prominent place or the accumulation of votes through a shared sub-lemma. This approach would allow maximizing electoral possibilities for both parties, although there are still some details to be settled before formalizing the alliance.
Sources from the National Party indicate that the preeminence that Sartori could receive within the Herrerista list could be key to improving its electoral programming. His integration is seen by the leaders as a potential way to aspire to two seats in the upper house, although they recognize that achieving this goal will be a significant challenge.
At the same time, within Herrerismo there is already a consensus regarding the inclusion of Laura Raffo at the head of their lists for the Senate. As a previous candidate of the sector and linked to the Sumar project, her position is firm to occupy the substitute position of President Luis Lacalle Pou.
Herrerismo Alliances: Key Conversations
Herrerismo is undergoing a process of redefinition after the results of the last internal elections, where the numbers did not meet the group’s expectations. This context has generated tense negotiations and has led to an ideological reorientation towards what they call a “modern right” and “the most liberal sector of the National Party,” according to Laura Raffo.
The departure of deputy Sebastián Andújar, now aligned with Espacio País, marked the need to establish strategic ties in areas such as Canelones. In recent attempts at alliances, they have considered an agreement with deputy Javier Radiccioni, although this arrangement has not yet been finalized. These movements reflect the complexity and fluidity of the current political environment for Herrerismo.
