Francisco Arriaga offers a weekly dinner in the basement of a church in Chicago, United States, but lately does not put many tables because the faithful do not attend for fear of antimigrants ordered by President Donald Trump.
“Everyone is afraid, not only the undocumented,” says Arriaga, musical director of the San Pablo Catholic Church in Pilsen, a neighborhood that concentrates a good part of the Latin population of the city.
“Normally I would be twice as prepared, but only three people came to our last meeting,” he says to the AFP.
Pedestrian traffic in Cermak Road, the main artery of Pilsen and business headquarters and restaurants, has decreased in recent weeks before the ads of raids and Trump’s threat to send national guard troops.
“If people think this will stop with the immigrant community, it will allow the Trump regime to normalize this, and anyone can be the following,” warns Councilor Byron Sigcho-Lopez.

Sigcho-Lopez states that the arrests in Chicago by the customs immigration and control service (ICE) have not been massive so far, but that does not reduce concerns.
«Trump is causing, that is his strategy. We tell people that it is important to keep calm and record everything with their phones to document what is happening, ”he says.
The population of Chicago, of 2.7 million inhabitants, includes more than 800,000 that were identified as Hispanics or Latinos in the 2020 census. It is estimated that some 150,000 people reside in the city in irregular immigration situation, which represents about 8% of households.
