Latin American Confederation of Religious confirms expulsion of Missionaries of Charity

Ortega ha cerrado 758 ONG, incluyendo a las Misioneras de la Caridad

The Latin American Confederation of Religious (CLAR) confirmed that the Missionary Sisters of Charity, an order created by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, were expelled from Nicaragua prior to the cancellation of the legal personality of their association. The non-governmental organization (NGO) was part of the list of 101 associations that were outlawed on June 29 by the Sandinista deputies before the National Assembly, at the service of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The Nicaraguan authorities notified the nuns of foreign origin, who are the ones who manage the charity centers, that they must leave Nicaragua. Since last June 15, the Missionaries of Charity Association closed operations of a nursery, a home for abused or abandoned girls, and a nursing home that they managed in various areas of the country.

The Ministry of the Interior (Migob) maintained that the Missionaries of Charity are not accredited by the Ministry of Family to function as a nursery, child development center and home for girls or a nursing home, nor do they have permission from the Ministry of Education to carry out the learning reinforcement.

The Missionaries of Charity Association was created on August 16, 1988 during the first Sandinista regime (1979-1990), and its opening took place after a visit to Nicaragua by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, in which she met with Ortega , who was also the president at the time.

«The Religious Missionaries of Charity, who served in #Nicaragua since 1988, and whose work was intended to house vulnerable people with limited resources (a center for the care of children and the elderly), they were expelled from the country,” CLAR wrote on its Twitter account.

“This incomprehensible situation unites us and strengthens us, to continue crying out in favor of the poorest, who today suffer the consequences of this decision by the Government of #Nicaragua. From the @clar_vr We express our solidarity with our sisters and with the #Religious life“, Add.

The Latin American Confederation of Religious – CLAR is an international non-profit organization of pontifical law with ecclesiastical legal status, governed by universal law and its statutes, made up of 22 National Conferences of Superiors and Major Superiors of Latin America and the Caribbean . Erected by the Holy See on March 2, 1959.
