LATAM Peru suspends its flights to Cuba due to fuel crisis

LATAM, Cuba, La Habana

LIMA, Peru – Since last February 14, the airline LATAM Airlines Perú suspended its flights between Lima and Havana due to the impossibility of refueling its planes in the Cuban capital due to the absence of aviation fuel at the José Martí International Airport.

A site report Aviationline indicates that the company will maintain a limited flight schedule from Havana to the Peruvian capital exclusively until March 7, in order to facilitate the return of passengers who are already on the Island.

As of that date, the route that operated three weekly flights will be deactivated indefinitely until the conditions of infrastructure and airport services in Havana guarantee the safety and regularity of operations.

To mitigate the impact on users, LATAM Airlines Perú enabled a full refund of the amount of tickets, including additional services such as seat selection and baggage clearance.

As an alternative option, affected passengers will also have the possibility of changing their destination to Cancun or Punta Cana without additional costs, as long as the trip is completed before June 30, 2026 and there is availability in the same cabin originally contracted.

During the last week, the energy crisis in Cuba has motivated restructuring in the operations of several airlines that operated in the country.

The Russian Embassy in Cuba reported last Wednesday that the airlines Rossiya Airlines – part of the Aeroflot group – and Nordwind Airlines made “forced adjustments” in the flight program to Cuban airports “due to difficulties with the refueling of aircraft in Cuba.”

According to the statement, in the coming days “Rossiya” “will launch a series of flights with cargo only in the opposite direction—from Havana and Varadero to Moscow—to guarantee the transportation of Russian tourists currently in Cuba.” After those return flights, the airline will “temporarily suspend” its program “until the situation changes.”

In addition, the airlines WestJet Airlines and Air Transat announced the temporary suspension of their flights to the Island, a decision that adds to the immediate stoppage of operations. communicated last Monday by Air Canada.
