LatAm countries will discuss plan to combat inflation

Eight presidents and two prime ministers of Latin America will meet on April 5 in a virtual summit in which they will seek to draw up a mutual aid plan to contain the inflation in their national economies.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been one of the promoters of this meeting between countries, has confirmed the attendance of the different leaders in his morning conference this Thursday.

Specifically, the presence of the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba and Honduras is expected, as well as the Prime Ministers of Belize, Johnny Briceño; and from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves. The latter country currently holds the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

Regarding other countries, the president of Mexico stated at the beginning of March that, for the moment, a few countries are going to advance in the agreement, avoiding making a more detailed mention when asked by Peru. “Little by little it will expand,” he said.

The objective of this meeting it is to achieve “good prices” for the internal market of the countries, through the reduction of tariffs or other trade barriers, for example. Subsequently, the presidents plan a face-to-face meeting to close this agreement, in which the inflation of food will have a relevant role.
