Last minute meeting between mayors of the Caribbean and Minminas due to high electricity rates

This Thursday, September 8, a meeting will be held between the mayors of the Colombian Caribbean and the Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez, to seek solutions to the high tariffs in the energy service suffered by households in that region with amounts, in some cases, exorbitant.

Precisely, complaints have increased in recent months, due to the values ​​that are reflected in electricity bills throughout the country, although with more concern, on the Caribbean coast.

“Revenues are too little to pay bills of up to $25 million. Where is a person going to get money to pay for that,” one of the affected users told RCN news.

The Governor of Cordoba Orlando Benitez, will request “a subsidy that compensates and balances the cost of energy on the coast”. Meanwhile, the National Government requests explanations from the companies providing the service.

“We have had some specific dialogues with trading companies that they are going to have a responsibility,” said the Minister of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

For their part, the energy generating unions say that should study regulatory alternativesthat do not involve risk, to build a definitive solution that will serve all parties.

It should be remembered that the Commission for the Regulation of Energy and Gas (CREG), the Superintendence of Services and the Ministry of Finance also will review the regulation of energy rates, in order to make them stable and affordable for all citizens.
