The law establishes regulations such as, for example, the gestation period to interrupt a pregnancy.
President William Lasso reiterated on Friday, February 18, 2022, its intention to veto the law that regulates abortion in case of rape. The norm was approved on Thursday in the National Assembly, after a long debate that reached 75 votes.
“The president’s position is going to be expressed as the Constitution mandates, through the veto. I respect life from conception“Lasso said during a visit to Montalvo canton, Los Ríos province.
The president had already advanced his intention to veto the norm, in January of this year, despite the fact that the details of the project were still under discussion in the Assembly and the final wording of the text was not known.
At the discretion of Lasso, who has a period of 30 days to impose the veto, the Assembly has exceeded the mandate of the Constitutional Court, so you think it’s necessary to reverse it.
The approved standard allows women victims of rape who have become pregnant they can interrupt pregnancy up to 12 weeks, and exceptionally up to 18 weeks in cases of girls, adolescents, indigenous women and women from rural areas.
This was the result of a second vote after a first attempt by only gathering 66 votes in favor. Therefore, a reconsideration was requested and changes were made to the text to get a sufficient majority and approve it.
In Ecuador, abortion was only allowed in cases where the woman’s life is in danger or for rape of disabled women. (EFE)
