Atlético-MG let the unprecedented Copa Sudamericana title and place in the 2026 Libertadores slip away by losing the final to Lanús (Argentina) on penalties, 5-4, after a 0-0 draw in the 120 minutes of the match (90 of regular time + 30 of extra time), at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium, in Asunción (Paraguay). The champion was defined in the seventh round of kicks, with Argentine goalkeeper Losada saving the penalty taken by Vitor Hugo.
After a 12-year fast, Lanús won the second title in the club’s history – the first was in 2013. In addition to a guaranteed presence in next year’s Libertadores, the Argentines will receive a prize from Conmebol worth R$54.3 million, and Alvinegro from Minas Gerais will receive R$30.5 million for the runner-up position.

The team from Minas Gerais had the chance to win in the first half of extra time with two dangerous balls, the first in the 8th minute with Caio Paulista who shot wide. Two minutes later, Rony tried with a header and, subsequently, Biel shot hard into the middle of the goal. Both attempts ended up in the hands of goalkeeper Losada. In the final 15 minutes, Huck rolled the ball to Biel, who advanced into the area and shot over Lousada. The Argentine goalkeeper made another great save.
In the penalty shootout, Lanús started behind: Everson saved the ball hit by Walter Bou but, afterwards, Hulk shot in the middle of the goal and made it easier for Losada to save. Everything the same. Then Izquierdo and Marcich converted for the Argentines, and on the Brazilian side Gustavo Scarpa and Igor Gomes also found the net. In the fourth penalty, Aquino scored for Lanús, and Biel had the penalty saved by Losada. Lanus led the score in the last of the five penalties when the experienced Lautaro Acosta isolated the ball and kept Galo’s chances alive. Goalkeeper Everson took the penalty with skill and equalized the score again: 3 to 3. In alternate penalties. Augustín Cardoso scored for the Argentines and Alexsander for the Brazilians. Then Watson also hit the back of the net, putting Lanús ahead again, and finally Losada saved Vitor Hugo’s shot, sealing the Argentines’ 5-4 victory.

The first stage of regulation time began with a truncated game, with tight marking on both sides. In the 13th minute, Lanús had the chance to open the scoring: Carrera finished from the edge of the area, but the shot was weak and Everson saved. Afterwards, Galo responded with Arana, who delivered a torpedo from inside the area, but goalkeeper Losada made a great save. At 18 minutes, Galo had the best opportunity of the match with a free kick: Bernardo shot straight and the ball capriciously hit the post and went out. In the final minutes, Dudu rolled the ball for Igor Gomes to finish from outside the area, but the shot went low, making it easier for Losada to defend. In the 46th minute, Carrera launched a bomb from the edge of the area, but the ball went out, with no risk to Galo’s goal.
After half-time, Atlético-MG was even more offensive. At 13 minutes, in a play started in midfield, Igor Gomes threw it to Dudu. He squared off with Arana, before taking a well-placed shot, but goalkeeper Losada saved it for a corner. At 21, after an assist from Hulk, Junior Alonso took a risk from outside the area and the ball passed close to the Lanús goal. With Galo’s strong marking, the Argentine team faced difficulty advancing from midfield onwards. One of the few opportunities was in the 44th minute, with Castillo who dribbled his marking inside the area before shooting low, but the ball went wide of the goal.
