CDMX, Mexico-. After sailing for 10 days without direction and with exhausted food and water supplies, the Mexican authorities rescued 10 rafters Cubans traveling in an improvised boat.
The Cubans were clamoring for food and imploring to stay in Mexico. requested political asylum, highlights the note.
The nationals left from Matanzas and their objective was not to disembark in the United States, but in Mexican territory to start their way north from Aztec land. With this new route, the migrants sought to avoid the continuous deportations of rafters from Florida to Cuba.
In 2022 they already exceed 5,400 people intercepted at sea por the US authorities. On the other hand, those who arrive by land are more likely to not be returned. Hence, it is logical that Cubans without money to pay for a flight to Nicaragua prefer to reach Mexico by sea and then move to the North American border.
Before their arrival in the Mexican state of Quintana Ro, the National Institute of Migration in Cozumel requested the support of the Public Security and Transit Directorate for the protection of the undocumented, local media reported.
After verifying that they were in good health and that no other rafters had hidden or lost in the surroundings, they were made available to the immigration authorities for the corresponding procedures.
Probably the 10 Cubans (eight men and two women) will be deported.
In November, also in Cozumel, the authorities rescued 14 people from Cuba, who arrived on a sailboat that was in poor condition.
The migratory crisis that the island is currently experiencing is the largest since 1959. The current numbers pulverize any previous record and establish a new record, which not by chance coincides with one of the deepest economic crises suffered in the country.
