The challenges facing the region today are very different. Today’s summit in Washington will suffer Donald Trump’s passage through the White House. Trump’s presence still sets the agenda. From the free trade agreement (which Trump personally promoted) to his promotion of punitive measures in the immigration agenda, the reality of the region cannot be understood without the Trumpist footprint.
What will the summit leave in Washington? For the president of Mexico, the meeting with Trudeau and Biden is a magnificent opportunity to show that lopezobradorismo has a regional vision. López Obrador has already advanced that he will talk about migration. He has also said that if the issue arises, he will defend his energy reform initiative, no matter who it is. López-Gatell also travels to speak, one supposes, of cooperation in vaccines (hopefully he does not want to sell the Mexican response to the pandemic as an achievement …).
