It is worth clarifying, then: in the conception of a progressive government, a leading role for the country’s armed forces is inconceivable. A marriage between the army and progressivism is such a serious contradiction that it is, in fact, insurmountable.
For this reason, the evident complicity between the armed forces and the López Obrador government – the first of the (supposed) left in the country’s history – is so worrying. When the General Secretary of Defense opts for political proselytism in favor of the current project, he not only lacks his obligation of independence from power but also betrays, perhaps unknowingly, the Mexican president’s own promise of progressive government.
But if the propaganda of General Luis Cresencio Sandoval worries, the silence of Andrés Manuel López Obrador alarms. It is not necessary to review in too much detail the public trajectory of the opposition López Obrador to suppose that, at least at that time, the cronyism between the government and the Army would have seemed aberrant to him. But that was then. Now, as in other things, it seems that López Obrador is willing to let go of what would have been intolerable before. Not only that: if to consolidate his control of the reins of power it is necessary to turn his back on his promise of moral renewal and one of the essential axes of the progressive agenda, López Obrador does it without question.
