What should the government of a big city do, then? I think of New York. Mayor De Blasio has refused to close the city again, preferring to expand the capacity of diagnostic tests in these weeks. It is understandable. But there is a gulf between De Blasio’s caution and what Claudia Sheinbaum has done in Mexico. Celebrating and publicly promoting a massive party in the central square of the city, inviting the large gathering in times that require caution, is an act of irresponsibility.
It may be popular, but it is irresponsible. And the ruler does not have the obligation to be popular, less in such a difficult time during a pandemic. He has, perhaps it cannot be emphasized again, a moral obligation to act responsibly.
