Rural schools that lower curtains
This year, two rural schools will not open due to lack of children, they are: No. 14 of Vargas and No. 85 of yellow. However, after a closed year, the School No. 80 of Mangrullo blade will reopen its doors.
Rural schools in Uruguay have faced significant challenges due to the migration of the population to urban areas, which has resulted in a decrease in student enrollment in rural areas. However, in recent years, this decrease has shown a tendency to stabilize, and even some schools that had closed have reopened their doors thanks to initiatives that promote the return of young families to the countryside, encouraged by job opportunities in sectors such as forestry and livestock.
In the department of Cerro Largo, there are 70 rural schools, of which 14 are pluridocentes and 56 unidocentes, attending to a total of 892 students. These institutions not only teach formal education, but also act as social and cultural centers in their communities. However, some schools have had to close temporarily due to the lack of students, with the hope of reopening when the child population in the area increases.
