Lack of fuel and lubricants: 48% of Cuba will remain shut down this Sunday

Apagón en La Habana

Lack of fuel, lubricants and inoperative generation plants aggravate the already complicated energy panorama on the Island.

LIMA, Peru – LIMA, Peru – La Unión Eléctrica (UNE) reported this Sunday that the national electrical system will remain in a serious situation, with blackouts in about 48% of the territory due to the strong generation deficit.

In its daily note, the state company acknowledged that the service was interrupted for 24 hours on Saturday, October 18 and that the effects extended throughout the early hours of this Sunday. The maximum disconnection of the previous day occurred at 7:30 p.m., with a deficit of 1,486 megawatts (MW).

Among the main incidents this Saturday are the breakdowns in Unit 2 of the Felton Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), Unit 3 of the Santa Cruz CTE, Unit 8 of Mariel and Unit 3 of the Renté CTE.

Likewise, maintenance is carried out on Unit 2 of the CTE Santa Cruz and Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Cienfuegos.

The UNE recognized that there are 427 MW out of service due to thermal limitations. In addition, problems persist due to lack of fuel, with 52 distributed generation plants inoperative (467 MW) and 137 MW unavailable due to lack of lubricant, totaling 604 MW affected by this cause.

The situation will worsen during peak consumption hours. According to the state electricity company, at the night peak demand will reach 3,250 MW, while the available generation will be only 1,770 MW. This will generate a deficit of 1,480 MW, with an estimated impact of 1,550 MW, equivalent to 48% of the national territory.

Electricity outages exceed 20 hours a day in eastern provinces, while in Havana blackouts reach up to 10 hours a day.

The energy crisiswhich has been dragging on since mid-2024, is due to breakdowns in obsolete thermal power plants, scheduled maintenance, lack of fuel and lubricants, in addition to the paralysis of dozens of distributed generation engines and poor government management.
