President Luis Lacalle Pou justified the direct concession of six airports in the interior of the country to Puertas del Sur, owned by Argentine businessman Eduardo Eurnekián.
“We governors sometimes have one, two, three, four paths to follow, under the protection of the Constitution of the Republic and the Law. In this case, a bill presented by the previous government established the possibility of concessions or of call for bids. Also a law of the previous government extended the terms of the concessions. There was an opportunity to improve five or six inland airports, ”Lacalle said.
A benefit
The president stated that at the working table he decided that “whoever could make an investment of more than 65 million dollars in six airports in the interior of the country, obviously had to have a benefit, in this case the extension of the concession.”
He preferred not to refer to the considerations against the Cabildo Abierto and the senator of the National Party, Juan Sartori.
The six international airports granted in concession until 2053 are those of: Rivera, Salto, Carmelo, Durazno, Melo and Paysandú.
