For at least a week, Bustillo has been on the hook for two events. One of them was because he did not sign the declaration of the Organization of American States (OAS) against Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and later Uruguay modified said original position. The second case refers to the more than 20 trips he made in the official car of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from Montevideo to Punta del Este, when official activities would have been very scarce.
This Saturday, March 12, President Lacalle Pou referred to both episodes that have had Bustillo as the protagonist, and for which he was harshly criticized by the opposition.
“With bustillo I speak often about all the topics. For bilateral negotiations, for MERCOSUR, and trade issues”, said Lacalle.
He assured that when someone from the government makes a mistake, “as happened with the foreign minister a few days ago, due to Uruguay’s position before the OAS, it is about correcting that error and that is what happened.”

Regarding the use of the car, Lacalle said that he uses his own vehicle and not the official one. “You all know me, I’m in my car.”
However, he considered that in the case of Bustillo for the use of the Foreign Ministry vehicle, “they are hitting him for hitting, because there is no illegality” and, from his point of view, “no immoral act.”
“Whoever spreads the news or generated the news will have their reasons. From the point of view of the government, and you know it well, the government has already removed several hierarchs from the beginning of the administration and for various reasons, that is, our pulse is not shaking. Now, when they hit for the sake of hitting, we don’t get on the bandwagon,” the president remarked.
He explained that the Secretary of State did not have a house in Uruguay, and lived part of the time in Punta del Este and sometimes in the summer season he had justified meetings with businessmen and investors who often come to Punta del Este.
