The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, will meet with Alberto Fernández in April, announced the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry after the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo and his Argentine counterpart, Santiago Cafiero.
“The foreign ministers agreed that a meeting will be held between the presidents Alberto Fernández and Luis Lacalle Pou during the next month of April, with the aim of expressing in a joint declaration the multiple agreements that were reached on the day of the date, in the year of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of the Río de la Plata and its maritime front”, reads the Foreign Ministry website.
In turn, they commented that the meeting sought to “review the bilateral economic and trade agenda, promote actions that favor trade and investment between the two countries, as well as work on an action plan to increase trade through the export and investment promotion agencies of Uruguay and Argentina”.
For their part, the presidents of the central banks of both countries will be called to a meeting in order to “study the feasibility of implementing a system that streamlines trade between the parties, using the local currency.”
On the other hand, they agreed to “continue strengthening defense cooperation ties in the production and maintenance of equipment, such as aircraft and radars, favoring technology transfer and joint development” and to continue strengthening Mercosur’s link with the European Union.
Also participating in the meeting were the Chief of Staff of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Luciana Tito; the Argentine Ambassador in Uruguay, Alberto Iribarne; the Ambassador of Uruguay in Argentina, Carlos Enciso, and the general director for the Border and Maritime Border Affairs area, Carlos Mata.
