Among the issues addressed by the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, in the department of Florida was the reform of the educational system, and the measures that the teaching unions have been applying, both in Montevideo and in other parts of the country.
Regarding the educational reform, and about the occupations that have been taking place for days in various educational centers, he affirmed that “it seems to me that they are opposed to stop or block”, and added that: “The government is going to advance with the reform because he’s convinced that’s the way to do it. Some things were voted on in the LUC, they were referendums and the law is still in force. It is the best way for future generations to have more freedom.”
Regarding the occupation measure taken by teachers and student groups, he said: “I don’t know what inspires them; The government is not going to stop. They occupy, we vacate. And there will be no violence.”
He also pointed out that “the educational transformation is a very good action of the government because it modernizes education”, and that it aims to “personalize education; to give more autonomy to the centers; to change the curriculum, there is a curriculum that was from my high school days that has to be changed”.
