The president of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, said this Sunday, while in Brazil the presidential elections were being voted, that from Uruguay they are going to try to have an “integrated Mercosur open to the world” regardless of who is elected in the northern neighbor. “Whoever wins, Uruguay’s willingness is to have the best relationship. We are not guided by ideological affinities“, assured the president at a press conference, according to Telemundo.
Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva prevailed over President Jari Bolsonaro with 48.35% of the votes against 43.26%, but it was not enough for him to be elected and there should be a second round.
Lacalle Pou pointed out that although “Uruguay’s own position without prejudice to who governs in each place of the other Mercosur countries” is for the bloc to be “integrated” and “open to the world”, “obviously some candidate has said that he is more inclined to revise some instruments”.
“Lula said that it is necessary to review what has been advanced with the European Union. Perhaps there are other candidates who are more open. We will see. The result is settled by the Brazilians and we have to accept it and consequently work to have the best relationship, whoever wins, and achieve our goals,” the president said.
“Whoever wins Uruguay’s willingness is to have the best relationship. We are not guided by ideological affinities. We are not forming a club of friends for you. We represent a country. I represent those who voted for me, those who did not vote for me and would never vote for me, and in that sense it is not ideological. Why do I have to relate better to those who are on one side than the other? the president concluded.
