Lacalle Pou insisted on making Mercosur more flexible and asked "optimism" to Lula

The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, is speaking this afternoon at the Summit of mercosur that takes place in Puerto Iguazú.

He valued that it is important to “mark the discrepancies” without affecting “the ties”, especially when the presidents are “tenants” of the chairs that occupy the summits.

The president insisted that the bloc must “become more flexible.” “We are going to continue carrying the pitcher because Uruguay’s proposal is not capricious,” he affirmed, although he acknowledged that his proposal has had “very little echo.” “If we can’t do it that way, we’re going to do it bilaterally,” he said.

“We are all good but the poncho does not appear. There is substantially nothing, and Uruguay is struggling to get markets,” Lacalle added.

The president remarked that “it is much better” to negotiate with other blocs or countries “together”, but like Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo, he indicated that it is “immobility” that worries Uruguay.

In addition, he asked Lula for “a bit of optimism” in his “already abundant pessimism” about the agreement with the European Union, since in his opinion “22 years of negotiation in this world is not logical.”
