The outgoing president, Luis Lacalle Pou, made a call this Sunday to the elected president Yamandú Orsi to congratulate him on his victory in the second round of the national elections.

Through his Twitter account, Lacalle Pou expressed: “I called @OrsiYamandu to congratulate him as President-elect of our country and to put myself at his command and begin the transition as soon as he understands it is relevant.” This gesture marks the beginning of a peaceful transition process between administrations.

The president had anticipated that he would communicate with Orsi on the same day of his electoral victory, thus reaffirming his commitment to the democratic process.

Uruguay, full democracy

According to the latest Democracy Index 2022 report published by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Uruguay occupies 18th position worldwide in terms of the quality of its democracy, being considered a “full” country in democratic terms.

This ranking classifies countries based on several indicators, such as the electoral process, political plurality, political participation, political culture and civil liberties. Uruguay stands out in Latin America as one of the countries with the best democratic practices.
