The President of the Republic Luis Lacalle Pou confirmed that the doctor Karina Rando will replace Daniel Salinas at the head of the Ministry of Public Health from March.
Lacalle referred to the departure of Salinas at a press conference, during a tour of San Gregorio de Polanco (Tacuarembó), and assured that Rando –current general director of Coordination of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP)– is a “great professional”.
“The name that the Cabildo Abierto has given me is that. She is a great professional, I know her, she was working with us during the pandemic very actively, walked all over the country and it’s a name that was supplied long agowhen Daniel (Salinas) decided to leave the portfolio,” said the president, according to Telemundo.
Salinas decided to resign from the MSP in October 2022 and told his party leader, Guido Manini Ríos, and President Lacalle Pou. Days later, he assured that he would leave office in the first days of March 2023.
Since then Rando’s name began to sound, but it was not until this Monday that the president publicly confirmed it.
At the end of December, Salinas was consulted about the current general director of Coordination of the MSP and assured that it was a “prepared person”
“He is part of the team, he is filming, he has a master’s degree in management in London. He is a very lucid person and he handled the entire approach of Greg Mortimer very well.“He stated in dialogue with Así Nos Va (Radio Carve).
Who is Karina Rando?
Rando is a Doctor of Medicine and has a Master’s in Public Health awarded in 2019 by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as stated on the MSP website.
He also has a specialty in Anesthesiology and a Diploma in Public Management.
He worked in various public and private providers as an anesthetist, but he also taught at the Faculty of Medicine.
During the pandemic, he played a key role, especially leading the team known as “covid hunting“, who had behind him the detection and monitoring of outbreaks of this disease.
