Lacalle Pou: “Clearly the necessary votes have not been reached for the repeal of the 135 articles”

The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, spoke from the Executive Tower accompanied by the Vice President, Beatriz Argimón, and his entire ministerial cabinet (with the exception of Daniel Salinas, isolated by COVID-19).

In a short written speech in which he reviewed his achievements after beginning with a specific phrase: “It can be clearly established that the necessary votes for the repeal of the 135 articles have not been reached.”

Asked about the definition of “popular law” that the government used as a slogan during the “No” campaign, the president said that “everything depends on the definition of ‘popular'” because “we all represent the people.”

He assures that the result is “a carbon copy” of the ballot, so “nothing has changed.”

“A few days ago I was sitting here talking with you about a law for all of us here that was a commitment to citizenship, it was a bill that was spread long before it was presented. It was a draft law discussed, there was a huge number of articles of the final 476 that were modified, because there was dialogue as it exists in Parliament. We vindicate the National Parliament as the place where a synthesis of the different opinions is made”, added the president.

Regarding the words of Fernando Pereira, president of the Broad Front, who assured that there is half of the country that does not follow the LUC’s way of legislating, Lacalle said that he has not received official communication from him and assured that there is an open door to dialogue in the Executive Tower.
