President Luis Lacalle Pou and his wife Lorena Ponce de León decided to separate, as confirmed to The Observer various government sources.

Ponce de León currently leads the Sembrando program, an initiative within the orbit of the Presidency of the Republic that aims “to stimulate culture and favor the entrepreneurial spirit.” The decision implies that she leaves the residence of Suárez and Reyes, although she will continue to lead Sembrando.

Lacalle Pou and Ponce de León met as teenagers and married in June 2000.

Throughout his entire political career, Lacalle Pou has been open in telling details of his marriage and his family. In an interview for the De Cerca cycle, in the 2019 campaign, the then candidate recounted how they dealt with their difficulties in having children, and also spoke of the four months they were separated in 2011.

During this government, the president’s wife maintained a public profile from her role in Sembrando and accompanied Lacalle Pou to international events and tours, where she had her own agenda.

Ponce De León also had a visible role in the nationalist leader’s two presidential campaigns.
