Yamandú Orsi, who was elected president by the Frente Amplio in the November 24 runoff, will meet with President Luis Lacalle Pou between Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition, both will attend the Mercosur Summit to be held on December 5 and 6 in Montevideo.
It is anticipated that they will begin the transition process for March 1, when the transfer of powers will take place for the period 2025-2030. Orsi plans to meet this Monday with former president José Mujica and former vice president Lucía Topolansky at his property in Rincón del Cerro, while the meeting with Lacalle is scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday. “Tomorrow or the day after we will have to have the first meeting,” Orsi commented in a press conference reported by Telenoche (Channel 4).
Lacalle will convene his Council of Ministers on Tuesday afternoon, so the meeting with the president-elect could take place in the morning of that day or in the afternoon, once the meeting with the ministers is over. There is also the option for it to take place on Wednesday.
The outgoing president contacted Orsi on Sunday to congratulate him and guarantee him a protocol greeting, as well as to formally coordinate a transition meeting.
Regarding the formation of his next cabinet, Orsi was questioned by the press and mentioned that there are teams in various areas that have worked on the program or that have collaborated with it. “Now is the time to sit down to define a political balance and assess the profile and technical capacity of each one,” he stated.
The former mayor of Canelones also stressed his intention to have “ministers with strength”, who have a “political profile” and who, of course, understand the relevant issues.
In relation to the possibility of Cristina Lusternberg occupying the position of Minister of Health, he noted: “It could be, she has the necessary strength to assume that responsibility, but I have not decided yet.”
In another aspect, Orsi announced that he will continue to reside with his family in their home located in the Salinas resort, in Canelones. “It’s not just my decision, it’s the family’s, and they also have a voice,” he commented, referring to his wife and children.
Regarding Suárez’s residence, he mentioned that he will use it on those occasions when he must work late and get up early. “It is important to take advantage of the infrastructure to facilitate work,” he concluded.
