After ending a long streak of 31 years without knowing any victory in the Qualifiers as a visitor, the Bolivian national team arrived in the country this Wednesday after beating Chile 2-1 in Santiago. The players and the coaching staff were received by a large number of fans and journalists who gathered at the Viru Viru International Airport.
“We are totally excited, very happy with the victory. I still can’t understand the magnitude of this victory. It’s been a very long 31 years; we couldn’t win away from home in the qualifiers,” said Oscar Villegas, technical director of the Verde.
“I’m not promising qualification for the next World Cup, I’m just promising honest work. Now we have to focus on the next match; it will be against Colombia at home and we want to win it; that’s our immediate objective,” he added.
Bolivia, which last week had beaten Venezuela 4-0 in El Alto, showed up at the National Stadium in Santiago to pull off an upset and return with the three points thanks to goals from Carmelo Algarañaz and Miguel Terceros.
“We are happy, very happy with the victory. We know that Bolivia is going through very difficult times and it is nice to give this joy to the country; that is the most important thing,” said Terceros.
After this double date in September, the national team players will return to their clubs and in October they will concentrate again to focus on Colombia (10) and Argentina (15).
With this victory, La Verde has 9 points and is just one point away from the direct qualification zone for the next World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
