General Pablo Ramirez, director of the National Comprehensive Care Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) spoke about the advances to recover the prison control and avoid massacres like those of 2021, which left 300 deaths of persons deprived of liberty.
‘The Rock’ will be ready in 40 days
The old prison of Guayaquil, known as ‘The rock‘ is being adequate to receive prisoners who will be relocated according to a level of security and risk. To know this, the SNAI will launch a prison census. Ramírez did not give an execution date but said it would be “in the next few weeks.”
For now, ‘The rock‘ is being adequate in infrastructure and then technology will be incorporated. It is estimated that this process will be ready in 40 days.
Does the state have control of the prisons?
A report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights noted that the prisons in Ecuador they lack effective control by the State.
When asking Ramírez, who currently has the prison control?, responded that they are in an inconstant dialogue with prisoners “to carry out a prison control and in this way contribute to the rehabilitation that we long for.” He added: the control “We are taking it up again through the dialogues.”
