Between 2023 and 2024, the Poderosa mining company has reported more than 18 attacks against its concession in the province of Pataz, a situation that reflects the increase in violence and the presence of criminal organizations fighting for control of gold exploitation in the province. region. However, all eyes are on Congress, which should finally avoid further extensions for the Comprehensive Mining Formalization Registry (Reinfo).

Ismael López, head of Communications at Poderosa, warned that the situation has become unsustainable and that the PAS (Safe Country) Collective is working so that Congress does not approve more extensions of this registry, created in 2016, to facilitate the formalization of the artisanal and small-scale mining.
“There is a campaign by the PAS Collective that seeks to stop Reinfo from continuing, since it has become a free pass for illegal mining, generating deaths and human trafficking. “We need the collaboration of all citizens to sign and demand that Congress not approve further expansions of Reinfo,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, López highlighted the negative impact of illegal mining on the local economy and the environment.

Reinfo has been in operation for several years and, despite the number of registered miners, the formalization results have been disappointing. Of the 87,111 miners who registered in the registry, only 2,032 have managed to formalize it, which represents just 2.4%. This indicates that the vast majority, a total of 69,107, have been suspended from the process for failing to comply with the requirements.
The data provided by the Foreign Trade Society of Peru (ComexPerú) on October 31, in that sense, are clear. The majority of miners who tried to formalize themselves have failed in the process.
