La Altagracia Maternity reduced its spending by almost RD$ 19 million

After the implementation, in April, of the hospital protocol for the care of foreign patientsthe Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Maternity Hospital recorded a reduction in public spending by 27.31%, as well as a significant decrease in the proportion of births to foreigners compared to the previous year.

During the 2025the hospital recorded 4,738 birthsof which 4,653 were live births (98.21 %) and 85 still births (1.79 %). The number of births was 4,661, including 1,646 vaginal deliveries (35.31%) and 3,015 cesarean sections (64.69%).

Of the total births, 3,286 corresponded to Dominican patients (70.5%) and 1,375 to foreigners (29.5%).

In contrast, during the year 2024they occurred 7,592 birthsof which 3,425 were from foreign patients (45%). This represents a reduction of 2,050 births to women of other nationalities, equivalent to 59.85% less compared to the previous year.

Tax savings and sustainability

According to a press release, one of the main achievements of the year was the decrease in public spending associated with care of foreign patients.

Between April and December 2024the hospital allocated 69,458,416.14 pesos to these attentions, while in the same period of 2025 The expense was 50,482,581.49 pesos, which represents a saving of 18.9 million, equivalent to a reduction of 27.31%. Likewise, the hospital’s internal debts decreased by 43.81%.

Services offered

In external consultationin the La Altagracia Maternity they offered 68,925 attentionsof which 60,672 corresponded to Dominican patients (88.03%) and 8,848 to foreigners (12.84%). In addition, 7,971 consultations were for adolescent patients, 11.56% of the total.

In the area of Emergency they registered 11,559 attentionswith 10,876 hospital admissions.

In images they were made 27,063 proceduresand in the laboratory 372,863 testsincluding 307 karyotypes, a highly specialized service that only this hospital offers in the public sector, at a subsidized cost of 6,000 pesos compared to 30 or 40 thousand pesos in the private sector.

Also notable is the growth of the gynecological endocrinology service and the menopause and climacteric clinic, providing direct care to more than seven thousand patients.

Another milestone was the restructuring of the Kangaroo Mom Program (PMC) since May 2025. They were captured 330 premature babies or low weight, more than 400 families were accompanied and 81 children completed successfully said program,

The hospital director, Jorge Arturo Jimenezhighlighted that these results respond to “a team managementoriented towards efficiency, quality of service and responsible use of public resources, with the support of the National Health Service.

Births in the DR decreased by 18.4%

The implementation of new hospital protocols as of April 21 represented a decisive change in the behavior of registered births, especially in relation to the presence of Haitian parturients in public centers.

Adding all the hospitals in the country, in 2025, 74,784 births were registered, of which 75.1% (56,148) were to Dominican mothers and 24.6% (18,434) to Haitian mothers. Meanwhile, in 2024, 91,661 births were recorded: 58,511 (63.8%) to Dominican mothers and 32,967 (36%) to Haitian mothers.
