Kurt Burneo: "A bad decision, 10 years earlier, was to propose embarking on the Talara Refinery"

The Minister of Economy and Finance, questioned that 10 years ago they opted for the modernization project of the Talara Refinery.

“For me a bad decision, almost 10 years before, was to propose, on the Petroperú side, to embark on the Talara Refinery modernization project,” he assured during his participation in CADE Executives.

He also indicated that the work had an initial cost of US$1.4 billion, but “on the way the modernization became a new refinery whose cost is around US$6 billion.”

“The outgoing president of Petroperú resigns in the midst of all this, but if we remember a little, who came up with the idea, who was president of the company in 2013, when the story begins, it is the same man who resigned from the presidency of Petroperú when things got hot. That personally bothers me, “he added.

COMPETENCIES OF THE MEF

Secondly, Kurt Burneo He stressed that “the powers of the MEF are not discussed” and that this was a rule that he set from his entry into the portfolio.

“I saw with some concern, surely with good intentions, from some sectoral ministers who wanted to put an agenda of issues on me, but an agenda of economic issues and that is not permissible, at least not from my perspective,” he assured.

Likewise, he affirmed that he has autonomy to make decisions and recalled that “the powers of the MEF are not discussed (…) they are respected.” “I said that because there were some initiatives that came from some sectoral ministers, and things have to be clear here, there cannot be a kind of co-government in economic policy,” he added.

He indicated that although it is true that the initiatives of the holders of the various portfolios are discussed in the Council of Ministers and are reported to President Pedro Castillo, but the decisions of the MEF are made by “the minister.”

GDP GROWTH

On the other hand, the head of the MEF stated that there is concern about the speed at which the Peruvian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is growing.

“The economy continues to grow, the concern comes from the speed of growth,” he assured during his presentation at CADE Executives where he explained part of the plan to reactivate his portfolio.

The head of the MEF pointed out that although there are external factors that are affecting the progress of the GDP, he also stated that there are delays in Congress to approve the projects within the framework of Impulso Perú.

Kurt Burneo also pointed out that the pace of public investment is recovering and highlighted the importance of this disbursement.
