The representative of the Ombudsman’s Office in Tacna Edward Vargas Valderrama reported yesterday that during the visit to the Challapalca prison on Monday it was found that there are 182 highly dangerous inmates. “The prison facility was built for 240 inmates, which is why there is no overcrowding,” he noted in an interview on a local radio station.

He stated that the inmates complained about the delay in their processes since of the total prison population, 70% of them have a sentence and 30% have their processes pending.
Agents rotate every four months
The inmates have a large kitchen that provides them with three meals a day, Internet service to participate remotely in the processes, and a virtual courtroom.
The prison is protected by 25 INPE agents who rotate every 4 months, while family visits occur on Saturdays and Sundays.
There is no expansion yet
He stated that no evidence was found that more pavilions are being expanded or built in the prison, only the installation of 180 cameras within the framework of a project of 15,000,000 soles that has been going on for months.

He pointed out that in the surrounding area the residents enjoy quite a bit of security since on the one hand they have INPE agents and on the other a barracks, on one side of the prison, which generates a constant movement of soldiers.
External and internal security
Even, Valderrama said, on the day of the visit, a patrol car from the Ticaco police station was noticed, whose personnel when consulted stated that their transfer to the area is part of their daily routine.
“Both inside and outside the prison there is a lot of security, the population does not argue insecurity at all, it even generates an economic movement since there are small restaurants, grocery stores and a lodging,” said the lawyer.
