Who until October 2022 was the drug lord of the Penarol neighborhoodMauro Segales is short and stocky. He has a shaved head and slanted eyes that seek fixed points to bury an empty gaze. Meanwhile, vehemently, Homicide Associate Prosecutor Alana Eccher explains in great detail what Segales did to Beba, a woman in her late 30s whom she killed because she believed she had betrayed him.
His lost gaze almost never rose. It was as if Eccher was not describing what one of the bloodiest crimes of 2022 was like and as if he had not participated.
But when he told that he was the one who sawed Beba’s dead body into parts, something triggered him. Her slanted eyes dropped slightly as she frowned. And then up, when he raised his eyebrows, amazed that the prosecutor detailed what he told the young woman while he was killing her.
–You are tough! – Was what Segales told her while he suffocated her. as she was hard and he wouldn’t die, he ended up stabbing him with a knife in the neck on one side and burying a tramontina on the other side, leaving only the handle outside.
The narco leader has been in prison since October and fell for a homicide he committed by mistake. But the Homicide Prosecutor of 3either Shift, whose owner is Adriana Edelman who was also present at the hearing, had him in his sights for several more. This Wednesday, he expanded the charges against her and added the murder of Beba. In her crime there is another person convicted of concealment.
Segales and another member of his gang, Ramón “El Keto” Viana, are being targeted for a triple execution that occurred in the neighborhood on August 22 of last year. Two men and a woman were murdered in a cane field that the neighbors call “the Polo field.” Those three people used drugs, but they also sold, for the La Tita gang, the woman who won the drug war in Peñarol.
The evidence indicates that El Keto and Segales were the ones who committed that crime. The prosecutor’s theory maintains that Beba saw the crime and allegedly gave La Tita information that they were the culprits. As a result, La Tita’s group retaliated. Al Keto was shot twice: on September 6 and on October 10.
Later, Segales and Viana were convinced that Beba betrayed them and betrayed them with the woman from the rival gang, after having seen her at her house. So much so that the day after the triple execution, on August 23, they went to her and physically assaulted her. She was thrown to her floor and beaten until she passed out asking her “if she knew anything about the three dead,” Eccher said at a hearing she witnessed. The Observer.
Beba told her ex-partner, nicknamed Brazil, that Mauro and Keto had kidnapped her, they had beaten her and when she woke up they were both pointing a firearm at them.
“Should I kill her now or not?” Keto told Segales.
“Not now, give it a couple of days to see what happens,” the defendant now replied.
“We already know what happened days later,” warned the prosecutor. On October 24, Segales and Keto asked the latter’s sister to open up a room in the house they shared for them. When he arrives at the place a while later, he finds the men threatening Beba with a gun.
Segales repeated that he had to tell him everything, while Keto put tape on his hands, mouth and feet. The victim was “helpless, tied up and threatened,” Eccher recalled.
Finally, the defendant told him that he was giving him 10 minutes to speak. There, Beba raised her hand as a sign that she would speak. There she told a series of details that she knew about the triple execution. Also, what she knew she had told La Tita.
That sealed his end. Segales took her by the neck with her arm and choked her as hard as she could. But she was still alive, and that’s why he told her that she was “tough.”
Beba “was tied, threatened, almost suffocated, and since she was still alive, she received two stab wounds in the neck area. With such force and cruelty that one of the knives broke and became embedded in her body.
Keto’s sister saw it all and was in charge of discarding the body. But first, Segales took a saw and dismembered the victim’s body while Keto packed it in nylon bags. Finally, it was the woman who, in a supermarket cart, took the bags and deposited them in various storm drains in the same neighborhood.
Less than 15 days after Beba’s murder, on November 8, her ex-partner nicknamed Brazil participated in the murder of Keto and his brother. For this act he was sentenced on Monday, reported Telemundo. According to the record of the hearing to which he accessed The Observeras Segales “had lost”, that is, he had been arrested, Brazil he swore to Keto.
For this reason, at 3 in the morning on that November night, Brazil and another man nicknamed El Papo –for whom he sold drugs– went to sell chasquis (small doses of pastebase) to Keto and his brother, Marcelo Viana. Although it had not been planned, Brazil, taking advantage of the fact that they did not know him physically – and therefore did not know that she was Beba’s ex-partner – attacked.
When the Vianas turned around, Brazil hit Keto repeatedly with a kind of stove poker, described the head of the Homicide Prosecutor of 1either Shift, Carlos Black. Once on the floor, she continued to hit him.
Finally, El Papo – who is still a fugitive from Justice – finished them off with shots. He demanded that Brazil discard the bodies, but he dragged them a couple of meters and, taking advantage of the distraction of his boss, he ran and fled to Artigas, where he has relatives. Due to an altercation with them, he was imprisoned for several months in Cerro Carancho (Rivera) and was released on that charge on Saturday, at which time he was transferred to Montevideo.
He was sentenced for co-authorship of homicide to 5 years and six months in prison through an abbreviated agreement. When he had to explain to the judge what he had done, Brazil said: “I hit him several times.” “And then?” the judge asked.
To which he replied: “It was El Papo and he killed him (…) El Papo comes running and hits his brother with his neck and when I look to the side he runs to me and hits him. Then I he points the iron at his head and tells me ‘try to make the bodies disappear or else I’ll kill you’. That’s when I dragged them a couple of meters and released them and went to hell. I left.”
Segales was finally charged with two crimes of homicide, one very especially aggravated by serious brutality (having made people suffer unnecessarily in order to kill). The Homicide Prosecutor’s Office is working to finish gathering the evidence and be able to charge him with the triple execution in August.
His expressionless gaze did not remove the bulb from the wall in front of him at any time. She was unaware of everything that was happening around her. But when prosecutor Eccher said that she would ask that he be imprisoned for at least 180 more days, the drug lord looked to his left. He wanted to see who was asking for him to spend more time behind bars.
