The Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas affirmed after the elimination of his team in his group of the World Cup in Qatar 2022 that he does not rule out continuing in the team and neither will he play a fourth final phase of the tournament in four years, in 2026.
“I’m fine, I feel happy. We’ll see what the future holds for us”, He responded in the mixed zone when asked if he would continue to represent his team.
“It’s a privilege to represent the country and carry the flag. I’m happy. We’ll see”, pointed out the 35-year-old goalkeeper.
About the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, he said “many years to go” but left the door open.
Regarding the elimination in Qatar, Navas admitted feeling “sad”.
“A World Cup is not easy. There are teams of a high level. It is not easy to get up after a 7-0 (like the one on the first day against Spain). The team is not leaving happy, but at least with their heads held high,” he said.
“One already has more experience and knows how football works, for all it is important to know that these moments do not have to happen in vain. Whenever you fall you have to get up, that this fall will serve for the next World Cups that will come,” he said.
To progress in the future, Keylor Navas sees it as key that young Costa Ricans can reach the big European leagues.
“We have talent, we need the players to be in European leagues, that requires the player to always be 100%, the rhythm is different. When you are used to that pace, a World Cup doesn’t surprise you,” he said.
