Key themes in speeches by leftist presidents in the region

Today in the Plaza de Bolívar, the transfer of command of the Government of the President of the Republic, Iván Duque, to the elected president, Gustavo Petro, will take place. Among all the formal and artistic acts that will take place in the center of Bogotá, Petro’s first speech as president will also be heard.

Although it is possible to predict what issues he will address based on his speeches as a candidate, knowing how the speeches have been during the presidential inauguration of his counterparts from the same political current can also shed light on what Petro’s will be like. Therefore, we summarize some of the points that have been protagonists in the speeches in other countries of the region.

In the first place is the one who had the most recent inauguration, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who in his first official speech spoke of the creation of a new constitution, the migratory crisis that is being experienced in the north of the country, while in the south it continues a conflict with the native peoples. He also emphasized social inequality, crime, and violence against women.

“In this first year of government we have set ourselves the task of enthusiastically accompanying our constituent process for which we have fought so hard,” said Boric.

On migration, an issue that is also being experienced in Colombia with the arrival of the Venezuelan population, the president said: “in the north due to the migration crisis where we are going to retake control of our borders and we will work together with our brother countries to address collectively the difficulties entailed by the exodus of thousands of human beings. Let us never forget that they are human beings, please », he said.

Being a government with a different political tendency than the previous one, Boric also emphasized major changes in the pension, health and tax systems, three issues that have also been on the Colombian public agenda around Gustavo Petro’s proposals.
