More than six years ago, on December 13, 2017, a group of ten Fujimorists led by Kenji Fujimori abstained from voting in favor of the dismissal of then President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK). Their decision—openly defying the directive given by the leader of Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori,— prevented the vacancy of the president and marked the breakdown of the party and family relationship, but allowed PPK to grant a humanitarian pardon to the now deceased days later Alberto Fujimori.
On Wednesday night, on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the death of the president, Kenji and the group of congressmen known as ‘The Avengers’ met again. This time, not to seek the release of the former president, but to say their final goodbyes. Guillermo Bocángel, Bienvenido Ramírez and Estelita Bustos, on one side, and Clayton Galván, Lizbeth Robles and Sonia Echevarría on the other, flanked the youngest member of the Fujimori Higuchi clan, who held the book written by his father: The Weight of Truth. The reunion was captured in a photo.
As far as he could find out Peru21the former legislators had not seen each other for a long time and it was the death of the former president that brought them together again. The expulsion of People’s Force Kenji himself, Bienvenido Ramírez and Maritza García —another of ‘The Avengers’—, after FP failed to push through PPK’s vacancy.
Also the criminal complaint against the youngest of the Fujimori brothers for the alleged attempt to buy votes to prevent the success of a second motion to remove Kuczynski from office in March 2018. And finally, the sentence imposed on Kenji, Guillermo Bocángel and Bienvenido Ramírez by the Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice on January 9 of this year, of four years and six months of suspended prison and 18 months of disqualification for the crime of aggravated influence peddling.
Last goodbye
Yesterday, on the second day of Alberto Fujimori’s funeral, hundreds of Fujimori supporters, as well as political figures, continued to parade through the Nasca Hall of the Ministry of Culture.
Carlos Neuhaus, leading a delegation from the PPC, Fernando Cillóniz, the mayor of Lima, Rafael López Aliaga, Carlos Bruce, and others, arrived there to offer their respects and condolences to the three children: Keiko, Sachie and Kenji, and to the two siblings, Santiago and Juana, of the deceased former president. Hiro, the fourth child who is in Japan, it was learned, would not be able to make it to the funeral that will take place this afternoon.
At the express request of the former president, his remains will be buried in the Campo Fe cemetery in Huachipa, the same one where his ex-wife Susana Higuchi received a Christian burial on December 9, 2021. Previously, at 10 a.m., there will be a funeral mass.
I KNEW THAT
Elio Riera, Alberto Fujimori’s lawyer, has asked the judiciary to drop the criminal charges against his client in the Pativilca case.
The Attorney General’s Office agreed, but requested that the civil action continue to allow for the eventual payment of civil compensation.
