Keiko Fujimori questions the permanence of José Jerí: "Its presence is not certain until July"

The presidential candidate Keiko Fujimorileader of Fuerza Popular, said that “it is not certain” the permanence of interim president José Jerí in the Government Palace until next July. Statements that come in the midst of the investigations that Jerí faces for unregistered meetings with Chinese businessmen.

Fujimori stressed that the president “has done very little for the country in recent months” and that “the national agenda is distracted” by the so-called “Chifagate” case, which involves non-transparent meetings with businessmen of Chinese origin who are currently the subject of tax proceedings.

“Mr. José Jerí has done very little during these months and unfortunately today the national agenda is distracted by his non-transparent meetings (…) I hope that these investigations continue and that they are then brought to a conclusion. I believe that his presence in the Government Palace until July is not certain, that remains to be seen,” said the former candidate.

Fujimori also emphasized that the Fuerza Popular bench will be attentive to any developments regarding the investigations and that, “if any additional flagrante delict occurs in the case of José Jerí, they will not hesitate to act.”

President Jerí has appeared before the Attorney General’s Office at the Government Palace to answer for the unregistered meetings with Chinese businessmen, considered part of the ‘Chifagate’ case. The preliminary investigation into alleged crimes of illegal sponsorship of particular interests and influence peddling seeks to clarify the scope and possible links of said appointments.

Although there are motions of censure and vacancy presented in Congress against Jerí due to this scandal, to date none have achieved sufficient support to advance to an extraordinary plenary session to decide his early departure from office.
