On Wednesday, November 30, the Second National Criminal Court of Appeals allowed Keiko Fujimori travel to England and Spain, from November 30 to December 9 of this year.
However, the institution that had invited her, The Oxford Union Societylocated in Oxford, informed the former presidential candidate, on October 21 and 25, that the event had been canceled.
Yesterday morning, the professor of the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, Alonso Gurmendi, announced the decision of The Oxford Union Society to cancel the scheduled meeting with Keiko Fujimori.
Later, Gurmendi reported on his Twitter account that it was a Peruvian student at the University of Oxford who obtained the document. Gurmendi published the events calendar of The Oxford Union Society, in which the former candidate does not appear.
One of the reasons why the English entity canceled the presentation of Keiko Fujimori it was that she had stopped communicating. So, the question arose: Why didn’t she tell the Criminal Chamber that she no longer needed permission to leave the country?
“As we did not hear from Mrs. Fujimori until well into the last period, we informed her later (on October 21 and October 25, 2022) that it was necessary to rescind our invitation. We confirm that Mrs. Fujimori is not scheduled to speak (give a speech)”, indicates the statement of the English institution.
In another document to which he accessed The Republic you can see the signature of the president of The Oxford Union Society, Charlie Mackintosh, noting the same thing.
The communications secretary of Fuerza Popular, Marco Pacheco, reported that Fujimori is still in Lima because “they canceled his invitation because he could not confirm his participation.”
On October 3, Judge Víctor Zúñiga denied Fujimori permission to travel, because there would be no control by the Peruvian authorities, “in the event that the defendant can evade justice.”
Fujimori appealed the resolution and among the arguments he used to get the permit granted, he presented the invitation letter from the former president of The Oxford Union Society Ahmad Nawaz, on July 14. However, the institution rescinded the invitation and notified him on October 21 and 25, according to what he warned La República. He did not mention this situation until on November 29 the Second Criminal Court of Appeals granted the request to leave the country.
In any case, on November 30, Keiko Fujimori’s defense presented a document to the Judiciary stating that, since the travel authorization did not come out on time, due to the short time, he will no longer be able to fly to England.
“No ticket reservation or passport renewal has been processed, nor will it be done until a definitive itinerary is available,” said Fujimori’s lawyer, Giuliana Loza.
Fujimori has the trip to Spain left. She had been invited to the headquarters of the World Law Foundation by its president, Javier Cremades. In this regard, Giulliana Loza told La República that they are still awaiting confirmation from the organizers..
“For the time, we do not know if the dates are maintained or rescheduled. We have already reported this to the Chamber and the court. As long as they do not define the date, we cannot take the next steps, ”he explained.
For his part, the prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez, in charge of the case against Keiko Fujimori and members of the leadership of Fuerza Popular, stressed that the Prosecutor’s Office opposed with solid arguments the granting of permission to the former presidential candidate. The arguments are included in the resolution of the Second Criminal Chamber of National Appeals.
“The Prosecutor’s Office warned of a possible escape by Keiko Fujimori, so the judge Victor Zuniga He denied the departure of the leader of Fuerza Popular,” prosecutor José Domingo Pérez told La República.
The lawyer stated that no ticket reservation or passport renewal has been processed. At press time, Keiko Fujimori was in the country, according to Migrations. She still has the trip to Spain pending definition.
Did you notify the Judiciary about the trip or not?
In the invitation letter addressed by The Oxford Union to Keiko Fujimori, the precise dates are indicated: “Our next autumn term runs from October 10 to December 2, 2022, during which we will be delighted to receive it.”
The lawyer Giulliana Loza pointed out that “Just last night (Tuesday) Mrs. Keiko Fujimori received authorization to travel, that’s why we are validating her itinerary to inform the Judiciary”.
But if The Oxford Union announced the cancellation of his visit to London on October 21 and 25, why didn’t it notify the Judiciary? And if he did, where are the papers?
