the deputy Karol Cariola (PC) addressed in a letter his unsuccessful candidacy for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies. The legislator charged that she received attacks “loaded with misogyny and anticommunism.” In addition, she pointed to “excuses” of the DC and the PDG to comply with the administrative agreement with the ruling party.
The Communist Party announced yesterday its resignation “for now” to preside over the Lower House. According to the administrative agreement agreed in March, Cariola should have been the next president of the Lower House. However, the figure of the parliamentarian generated rejections in the DC and in the PDG.

“I want to thank the multiple manifestations of support received from people, authorities, social and political organizations, in response to the attacks loaded with misogyny, anti-communism and political violence that have sought to insult my image as a parliamentarian,” Cariola said in the letter, published in their social networks.
“As is already public knowledge, both the Christian Democracy and the People’s Party have conditioned, under various excuses, the fulfillment of the word pledged in the administrative agreement of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies,” continued the legislator.
Let us remember that the DC made its support for Cariola conditional on the support of some communist parliamentarians for the lawsuit filed by the Chilean Human Rights Commission against the former director of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), Sergio Miccofor allegedly covering up human rights violations during the social outbreak.
“I regret that the DC bench has explicitly stated that ‘they will not vote for a communist deputy,’ which reveals the veto of our party, which has won its parliamentary representation legitimately and democratically, hand in hand of the people and their sovereign decisions,” he said.
“As we have already said, we are not available to be used as an excuse to not keep our word and break agreements. Once again we have to live the consequences of persecution and siege for defending our ideas and convictions,” he added.
“As a Party we cannot allow or accept the attempt to force us to question the human rights violations that were committed during the October popular uprising in our country,” said Cariola.
“Hundreds of people had their eyes mutilated, many and many experienced harassment, torture and even lost their lives, all unacceptable situations in a democracy. It will be justice that determines whether the institutions and people in charge were up to the task or committed negligence” , he indicated.
Finally, he said that he hopes that “the political forces reach an agreement to lead the Chamber, based on mutual respect, without vetoes, and that it contributes to the fulfillment of the Government’s program.”
