Tucson. Vice President Kamala Harris has stepped up her campaign in Arizona with more than 65 events and the mobilization of thousands of volunteers scheduled in the coming days, to conquer this “swing” state, which the Democrats won in the last presidential election by just 11,000 votes.
The events are part of the ‘Weekend of Action’ with more than 2,300 events across the nation and the participation of nearly 175,000 volunteers with whom the vice president begins the countdown to the presidential elections on November 5.
This weekend’s events are focused on encouraging Harris’ candidacy and participation in the primary elections taking place next Tuesday, the campaign said in a statement.
Latin vote
Several of these events are focused on attracting the Latino vote, which is vital for the Democratic Party and made the difference in the last elections in this state.
The protest in Arizona began on Thursday with the presence of union leader Dolores Huerta, who gave her support to Harris’ campaign, who could become the first woman to be elected to the US presidency.
The activist called on Latinos to support Harris and took the opportunity to attack former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), whom she described as an “extremist and racist.”
Julie Chavez Rodriguez, granddaughter of activist and farmworker rights advocate Cesar Chavez, meets with Tucson Mayor Regina Romero on Friday as part of a strategy to encourage more support at the border.
Romero, the first Latina to hold the position, is one of several Democrats in Arizona who have endorsed Harris on her path to the White House.
Arizona and its 11 electoral votes are considered vital to determining who will win the presidency in November.
In 2020, now-President Joe Biden scored a historic victory by winning Arizona, a traditionally Republican state.
100 days from the elections
This Sunday marks 100 days before the presidential election, with both parties looking to win votes in states key to their victory. According to a recent poll, Harris has recovered some of the ground lost by Biden to Trump in swing states like Arizona.
Harris thanks the Obamas for their support
Harris thanked Barack Obama and his wife Michelle for their support in securing the Democratic nomination in the presidential elections next November. “It means a lot to have your support, @MichelleObama and @BarackObama. Let’s get to work,” Harris wrote in a brief message on her X account, in which she played the video of support she had previously received from the Obamas.
