Kamala Harris could mark a change in the Mexico-US relationship

Kamala Harris could mark a change in the Mexico-US relationship

She pledged to secure the border, accusing Trump of boycotting the law that would have strengthened it against illegal immigration. Harris has defended more humane and fair immigration policies, in opposition to Trump’s policies, which propose greater border control. It is worth mentioning that on the same day that Trump traveled to the border in Arizona to criticize the border security crisis, Harris opted for optimism in her speech.

In foreign policy, Harris proposes maintaining support for Ukraine and NATO allies, avoiding the isolationism that tempts Trump and some Republicans. On the Gaza war, she urged the release of hostages and an immediate ceasefire. This issue is key for young voters. University protests are social evidence of this.

Harris’ candidacy can help change the political narrative regarding minorities and inclusion. This contrasts with Trump’s often divisive rhetoric. A more inclusive approach can foster a sense of belonging among Latino voters.

Democrats have framed the election duel during the convention as a battle between the prosecutor and the criminal. Harris, as a lawyer and prosecutor, reiterated the importance of the rule of law. She also stressed the importance of a strong middle class that has always been critical to America’s success, and building that middle class will be a goal of her presidency.

Harris has had the support of four Democratic presidents at the Convention, starting with the current one, Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, while Jimmy Carter sent his grandson Jason as an emissary of his support. She has great political legitimacy.

The relationship between Mexico and the United States has been a central issue in foreign policy 202 years after diplomatic relations. With President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum and the possibility of Kamala Harris becoming President of the United States, a gender-based agenda could be promoted. As Vice President Harris has promoted this agenda:

One of the most complex and critical issues in the relationship between Mexico and the United States is migration and border security. As vice president, Kamala Harris has played a leading role in managing migration policy, with a focus on the structural causes of migration from Central America. However, resources were limited, because from her perspective as a lawyer, she was in favor of resources being managed by the business sector or civil society and not by governments, which have a history of corruption.

Trade and economic cooperation are fundamental pillars of the relationship between Mexico and the United States, especially in the context of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Kamala Harris has shown her support for the USMCA, considering it a crucial tool to boost economic growth and the environment. A joint agenda could focus on promoting female entrepreneurship, particularly in border regions, where women face barriers to accessing capital and markets. Binational programs that facilitate access to financing, mentoring, and training for women entrepreneurs could be essential to reducing these gaps.

A key component of a gender agenda between Mexico and the United States could be the implementation of labor policies that address wage disparity and women’s working conditions. This could include agreements that promote equal pay.

Security and the fight against organized crime are other critical issues on the Mexico-United States agenda. Harris has recognized the importance of cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and arms trafficking. As a lawyer and in favor of the rule of law, she would be in favor of a relationship where due process, the importance of the judicial process and respect for sovereignty prevail.

Both President-elect Sheibaum and presidential candidate Harris have supported initiatives to combat drug and arms trafficking, and have highlighted the importance of addressing violence from a comprehensive approach, including prevention and community development. A public health and gender-focused perspective on the issue of drugs is essential.
