After US President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from running for re-electionVice President Kamala Harris spoke out on Sunday (21) on a social network. Kamala said she will work to unite the Democratic Party and the country to defeat the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” said Kamala, who also asked for donations to her campaign. Project 2025, mentioned by Kamala, is the set of proposals from the conservative right in the United States to remodel the American government. These proposals were developed by the ultraconservative institution Heritage Foundation.
By dropping out of the race for president, Biden expressed his support for Kamala’s nomination to replace him. To run for president of the United States for the Democrats, however, Kamala still needs to have her nomination approved by the party.
On the X network, she also thanked Biden for his leadership in leading the country and said she was honored by the president’s endorsement of her candidacy. “On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and I intend to earn and win this nomination,” she said.
Withdrawal
On Sunday afternoon, in a post on the social network X, Biden stated that he believes that, despite his intention to seek a new term, it is in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the country for him to withdraw his candidacy. He then said that he will focus on his work as president until the end of his term in January 2025.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country that I step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on social media.
Biden’s announcement follows a wave of public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party insiders for him to drop out of the race after a poor performance in a televised debate last month against his Republican rival.
