Justice forced the Executive Branch to provide information on the Marset case

The Justice forced the Executive power to report all administrative actions related to the delivery of the passport to the Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset.

The senator Charles Carrera reported this Thursday on its Twitter account that the government “must report all communications exchanged between foreign service officials” and those maintained by the undersecretaries of the Ministry of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel, and Foreign Relations, Carolina Ache.

The senators of the Broad Front carried out a Request for access to information in March to the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs to learn the background of the resolution that granted the passport to drug trafficker Sebastián Enrique Marset Cabrera, currently required by Interpol. The document was signed by legislators Daniel Caggiani, Charles Carrera, Alejandro Sánchez, Sandra Lazo, Sebastián Sabini and José Carlos Mahía.

Between the consultations, the parliamentarians asked to know the administrative process followed by the authorities prior to granting a passport to a person residing abroadwhile requesting information about the offender’s legal status at the time. According to what was stated in the request, his intention was to find out if Marset Cabrera had an indictment or had a red notice from Interpol -which would have made it impossible for him to access the request- at the time of starting the process.

In turn, in September, the Broad Front bench in the Senate had decided to send the Prosecutor’s Office the full content of the interpellation made in mid-August to the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, and to the Chancellor, Francisco Bustillo. The intention is to clear up the “dark and strange” elements that, as they understood, could not be clarified in that call to the room.

In the opinion of the Broad Front senator, Alejandro Sánchez, one of those “foreign elements” It was due to the fact that Marset declared an address in Dubai while he was imprisoned when, presumably and according to the information available, he had passed through that country in transit to Greece. In addition, he maintained that the domicile declared by the narco in that emirate was a hotel in which he was never, since he was imprisoned upon arrival for using a false passport.

Sánchez wondered there “how do we process” the document to “someone who said that he lives on that side but in reality he does not live there but was in prison and, furthermore, “we went to take his fingerprints”.

The second “dark” aspect to be clarified, he said, involves knowing who was the hierarch who, despite the various queries made by Foreign Ministry officials, ordered to continue with the process.

In his reflection, Sánchez appealed to dates. On September 10, 2021, he noted, Marset was arrested. On the 21st of that month, a few days later, a meeting took place between the undersecretary of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel, and his colleague from Foreign Relations, Carolina Ache. The meeting, he remarked, was at the request of the Montevideo Anti-Drug Brigade, which had the drug trafficker in its sights.

Then, the senator pointed out, more strange circumstances arose, which happened “below the radar” in which “no one noticed” that Marset’s passport was being processed. In November 2021, he added, there will be a new meeting on the same subject between Maciel and Ache. “No one thought that there was something strange”Sanchez ironized. “It was all: go on, go on.”
