The Justice of Rio rejected the request of the state Public Ministry to prevent the appointment of the former mayor of Duque de Caxias Washington Reis as Secretary of Transport of the State of Rio. According to the lawsuit, Reis would be ineligible after being convicted of crimes against the environment and also against public administration.
In the decision, Judge Luciana Losada, from the 13th Public Treasury Court of the Capital, highlighted that the immediate removal is premature and that he can be acquitted in the criminal action after judgment of embargoes in the Federal Supreme Court (STF.)
Judge Luciana Losada wrote that the decision of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio (TRE/RJ) that rejected the registration of Reis’s candidacy as vice-governor on the ticket of re-elected governor Cláudio Castro was handed down before the opposition of the appeals presented to the STF.
“In the case of the records, it is a question of appointment to occupy the position of Secretary of State chosen by the head of the Executive Branch – and not of an elective position – suspending the incidence of the ineligibility of Complementary Law nº 64/90”, wrote the judge in the decision.
