In a statement, the legislator of the National Party expressed “Today, October 28, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. the abbreviated hearing was held, due to the events that occurred in the middle of the campaign for the defense of the LUC, where Senator Gloria Rodríguez, received through the social network Instagram serious threats and reprehensible expressions of discrimination by an active militant of the SI option.
In the hearing held, this person was sentenced as criminally responsible perpetrator for the authorship of a crime of acts of hatred, contempt or violence against certain people (in this case racism and discrimination), in concurrence outside of the reiteration with a crime of threats, to a sentence of 6 months in prison, which was replaced by a probation regime, conditional on strict compliance with a series of obligations, restraints, prohibitions and the provision of community services.
4- The Senator, in her capacity as a victim, attended the precept hearing, expressing her total disagreement with the sentence decreed. Said opposition was based, among other things, on the following:
A- Although the hate crime charged (racism and discrimination) was directed against him, it also affects the entire Afro-descendant population and society as a whole.
B- The decreed probation implies an intervention plan with community services that ultimately seeks the re-education and re-socialization of the offender. In this sense, there are no programs in our country that integrate the ethnic-racial dimension in their reeducation project.
Therefore, ultimately the purpose of the sentence would not be fulfilled.
