The Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, asked for the position on Tuesday (8), after being denounced by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) for alleged deviations in parliamentary amendments When he was a federal deputy.
He was in the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva since the beginning of his term of office in January 2023. According to the Presidency Department of the Presidency, the president called Juscelino Filho and asked the minister to resign, to be able to make his broad defense outside the government.
In an open letter released earlier in the evening, the now former minister said he requested dismissal to preserve the Federal Government’s project and focus on his own defense.
“The decision to leave now is also a gesture of respect for the Brazilian government and the people. I need to dedicate myself to my defense, serenity and firmness, because I know that the truth will prevail. The accusations that hit me are unfounded, and I fully trust the institutions of our country, especially in the Supreme Court, so that justice will come!”
The formal accusation was presented last week to Minister Flávio Dino, rapporteur of investigations into the case in the Supreme. The process runs under confidentiality. The complaint was sent by the UOL portal and confirmed by Agência Brasil.
After the PGR sends the complaint, Minister Flávio Dino must send the case to the first class, to be decided if the prosecution deserves to become a criminal action, which would make Juscelino Filho defendant in the Supreme.
If a criminal action is open, a new phase of procedural instruction begins, with the hearing of witnesses and the possible production of new evidence. There is no deadline for the final judgment of the case, in which Juscelino Filho may be convicted or acquitted.
Still in his open letter, Juscelino Filho, who is affiliated to União Brasil and has a federal deputy mandate by Maranhão, said he will return to the House of Representatives. He took the opportunity to make a brief balance of his management in front of the folder.
“I leave the ministry with my head raised and the feeling of duty. [Fundo de Universalização dos Serviços de Telecomunicações] – which was still for over two decades – For investment of over R $ 3 billion in digital inclusion projects, we deliver more than 56,000 computers in needy communities, we are connecting the Amazon with 12,000 km of submerged fiber optics and we make TV 3.0 ready, which will revolutionize open television in the country, “he said.
The name of Juscelino Filho’s substitute at the Ministry of Communications has not yet been informed by the Planalto Palace. President Lula is on an official trip to Honduras, where it will participate in the summit of the community of Latin American and Caribbean states (Celac)
