A 15-year-old adolescent is the youngest patient receiving antiretroviral treatment at the Carrión hospital along with 1,020 patients, reported the coordinator of the hospital’s STI/HIV, AIDS and hepatitis strategy, Nataly Villanueva Peña. The oldest patient is 80 years old.
In the Junín region, 1,848 cases of HIV have been reported, until December 2025, in the 9 provinces of the Junín region, reported the coordinator of Diresa Junín, Yusvely Vicuña Vila. He maintained that these are patients in whom the virus was detected up to 10 years ago.
This is why multiple HIV screening campaigns are planned to be carried out this week, so that people can access antiretroviral treatment.
“Antiretroviral treatment allows the HIV virus load to be kept controlled at such a level that it becomes imperceptible and undetectable. When it is not diagnosed in time, without treatment the HIV virus replicates to such a point that it decreases the person’s defenses and ends with AIDS,” explained coordinator Nataly Villanueva.
WORRY. Previously, the ages of patients with HIV ranged from 30 to 59 years, but now the youngest patient is 15 years old. This is why screening has been intensified and is accessible even in health centers such as Chilca and Justicia, Paz y Vida, where patients can receive their antiretrovirals.
On World AIDS Day, the Carrión hospital will carry out free screening for people. In addition, we seek to create awareness in society, so that patients are discriminated against.
DEFINITION. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the immune system and, without timely treatment, can progress to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Many people can live with the virus without presenting symptoms, so periodic testing is essential to access treatment in time and avoid complications. Early diagnosis allows you to start antiretroviral treatment, which helps maintain a healthy life and significantly reduces the transmission of the virus.
Today, preventive actions will be carried out to encourage adolescents and young people to delay the onset of sexual relations. In addition, campaigns will be carried out in risk groups. In addition, screening for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis is being carried out daily in health centers and from there the patient is referred to a facility to receive antiretroviral treatment.
“The beginning of sexual relations is increasingly earlier, in adolescence, which is why we already have patients with HIV at a very young age,” commented Yusvely Vicuña.
Likewise, they work with risk groups such as men who have sex with other men, transsexuals and prostitutes, groups that are reached through campaigns focused on the aforementioned risk groups. To whom they reach through contacts, what is sought is that with an early diagnosis they can follow timely treatment.
They seek to raise awareness so that people use condoms that protect them from HIV and sexually transmitted infections. In addition, they call on young people to delay the start of sexual relations.
In 2025, the MINSA seeks to diagnose 95% of people with HIV, 95% of them under treatment and 95% with viral suppression. Activities include free screening campaigns, counseling and strengthening antiretroviral treatment.
