The president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velardehe considered a “meaningless” the initiative to change the coat of arms of Peruvian currencies, claiming that this has been used for 150 years.
“The coat of arms has been used more than 150 years in the currencies. That is the identification of the currency. Change that almost does not make sense. If it has been maintained 150 years, that is its legitimate use,” said Velarde, according to RPP.
“But hey, the law must be obeyed … I hope they can reflect and modify that part,” he added in reference to the initiative is the result of a law.
The statements were given after a press conference in which the new commemorative silver currency was presented by the centenary of the reinstatement of the province of Tarata to Peru.
