The Federal Government reported that, in the 10 months of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the incidence of malicious homicides in the country has decreased 25.3 percent; However, he acknowledged that extortion registered an increase of 25.4 percent between January and July 2025, compared to the same period of 2019.
This was announced yesterday by the head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa, as part of the Security Cabinet report in the presidential morning.
The official said that from September 2024 to July 2025 there was a fall in the daily average of malicious homicides, from 86.9 to 64.9 in that period, that is, 22 less.
“There are 22 people less in July than in September a day. Of course we need to continue working, but it is a very important result, which is part of this permanent coordination we are having. Then, the strategy works. And we have to continue working every day,” said the Federal Mandatory.
Figueroa, meanwhile, added that when reviewing the incidence of this crime in the last decade, “July 2025 has been the lowest since 2015”.
Last month, seven states concentrated half (50.7 percent) of the total murders reported in the country: Chihuahua occupied the first site, with 9 percent of the national total; followed by Sinaloa, with 8.4 percent; Guanajuato, 7.7 percent; Baja California, 7.1; Guerrero, 6.7; Jalisco, 6.2, and State of Mexico, 5.6.
As regards the extortion, he presented a graph in which it was observed that, between January and July 2019 – when the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador began, the first of the 4T – and the same period of this year – with the Sheinbaum administration -, the crime has grown 25.4 percent, although he said that this is partly due “to which the complaint is being encouraged” federal to fight it.
Confiscated, 12 tons of drugs
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, informed that last July 2,458 people were arrested, 901 firearms and 12 tons of drugs were secured (including 13 kilos and 37 thousand 997 fentanyl pills) and 65 clandestine laboratories were dismantled.
He pointed out that, thanks to the arrest of “priority objectives” of the criminal group The barredorain Tabasco – organization linked to Hernán Bermúdez Requena, who was secretary of public security of the entity during the mandate of today Morenista Senator Adam Augusto López -, a 48 percent decrease in homicides in that entity has been achieved in that entity compared to last February.
The head of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, explained that as part of the voluntary disarmament program more than 5,000 weapons have been delivered and 264 peace committees have been formed.
For his part, the Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz – present at the conference – mentioned that the decisions of the US authorities are “very surprising” when negotiating with criminals extradited by Mexico, which do not coincide with the procedures of Mexican law.
This declared him when he was interrogated that Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán was allowed to have contact with his lawyer and that a federal judge ordered the Department of Justice that, no later than August 18, 2025, he set a position on the request of Rafael Caro Quintero’s lawyers about the strict isolation of the drug trafficker.
“The procedural decisions they make in the United States are very surprising to us. On the one hand they point out that there is a big problem in this sense and that they will not compromise, and then it turns out that in the procedures there is a series of negotiations and changes in compliance with a criterion that for us does not coincide with our law.”
