Yes

aúl Monreal Ávila refuses to abide by Morena’s agreement against nepotism, in this case corresponding to the candidacy for the governorship of Zacatecas (a position currently held by his brother David), and threatens to repeat the monrealazo that his brother Ricardo (who was also governor of the entity) carried out 28 years ago (on February 5, 1998), by renouncing the then dominant Institutional Revolutionary Party, declaring himself in the first instance a citizen without a party and then being registered in the name of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, with Andrés Manuel López Obrador as president of the Aztec sun and main promoter of such PRI split.

The Monreals (14 brothers, many of them dedicated to politics or public service at various levels, plus a good number of family members) have held municipal, state and federal positions, from relevant positions (municipal presidencies, councils, senators, governorships, federal delegations and high positions in the federal government).

Heading towards the general elections of 2027 and the subsequent ones, which next year will include Zacatecas, President Sheinbaum sought to promote a constitutional reform that would prevent close relatives of any ruler from aspiring to succeed him.

Such a Claudian intention would specifically affect at least Senator Félix Salgado Macedonio, who works hard to relieve his daughter Evelyn, whose lack of political office has made her behave in accordance with the predominant group; to Saúl Monreal, in the context already referred to, and to Ruth González Silva, senator for the Green party and wife of the governor of San Luis Potosí, also Green, Ricardo Gallardo Cardona.

The presidential proposal did not pass Congress (Adán Augusto López Hernández in the Senate; Ricardo Monreal in San Lázaro) and could only remain as an agreement of the National Council of Morena. Of course: the federal Congress accepted that the anti-nepotism measure be applied in 2030, knowing that in politics a stretch like this is extremely long and a counter-reform can be incubated at this point.

Saúl Monreal Ávila’s position is expressly challenging: he organized a kind of consultation with an assembly “of structures” (with dozens of participants, as can be seen in https://goo.su/EAauF), in a small repetition of what his brother Ricardo did almost on the same day, but 28 years ago, this one with thousands of participants, and maintains the same rupture speech (or negotiation, in this case of 2026): “I go as far as you want me to go (…) There is and should not be any guideline or statute that is above the will of the people (…) there are projects that are valuing our capital, that others want to reject” (NTR Zacatecas, in link mentioned in this paragraph).

The approach of the? Monreal implies the possibility that Saúl (just him?) leaves Morena. It is stated that in the Labor Party they are willing to support the split brother (the same is mentioned in Guerrero, with Salgado Macedonio) and, in San Luis Potosí, the Verde would be willing to go with whoever the current governor determines.

The challenge in Zacatecas is first of all for Luisa María Alcalde, the discursive president of Morena: should she pragmatically accept the nepotic regional powers and negotiate for them to be nominated by an “allied” party and Morena only joins, arguing that Morena’s single-party rules would not apply in alliances with other parties?

Secondly, for the Presidency of the Republic, not only because of the rejection de facto to his proposal against electoral nepotism, but even in terms of the candidacies that the Palace intended to promote: for example, the Claudian deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, who just yesterday announced, amidst criticism of David Monreal’s government, that on March 28 he will lead a “great Zacatecan convention” to build the 2027-2033 development program. See you tomorrow!
